Our second last day on the tour and I'm sad to say, as predicted we are now taking many of the beautiful sites for granted. We don't get as excited when we pass through a pretty stone village or see a thatch roofed cottage. However, the trip is not over yet and we have another day of exploring to do.
We headed off to Plymouth to take a crusie around the bay. Plymouth is steeped in maritime history and it was interesting to see historical sites as well as the newer industrial area along the bay. We even got to see some submarines.
From Plymouth we headed to Looe for lunch. This is another pretty fishing village with it's quaint streets and a great place to eat if you like cornish pasties. The streets lead you down to very nice little beach where all the Brits were out sunning themselves. If it were Australia, there would only be a few people out and they would be rugged up.
We also found that the seagulls here are very aggressive. Kari had her pastie stolen out of hand and I was walking up the street eating an icecream when all of a sudden I felt some flapping behind me and then brush up against my ear. It was a seagull trying to steal my icrecream. Luckily it didn't get it! It would have to be good to steal food off me...just ask Terry what happens if he tries to steal food off my plate at home.
After lunch we headed up into the hills to Dartmoor. This is a very rugged area that is only used for grazing sheep. The ground is so uneven and rocky that no other animal is suitable to raise up there. However, there is quite a large population of wild ponies who appear to quite friendly until one of the ladies on the tour nearly got bitten and pushed over by one of them.
On our way back to Torquay for our final night we had a stop at Postbridge. The only thing that is there is a Post Office and a bridge (oh, and a visitor centre). The attraction is a "clapper bridge" which is a bridge made of huge stone slabs that has been there since the early 1300s. It amazing to think how they got the stone slabs in place without the equipment we have today.
Before dinner we had time time to go for a walk so I took the chance to take a wander along a cliff walk near the hotel. It was a perfect evening with the sun shining and the beautiful clear blue water glistening as the sun slowly started to go down. I can see why people go toTorquay for their holidays.
A celebration dinner was held back at the hotel for everyone on the tour. It was lovely meal meal with some great company. As I've said in my earlier posts we had a fantastic group who all got along really well. We we very lucky for our first tour. While I think we've both had enough of bus travel we will miss lots of these people.
